Very nice camera, many many features and easy to use, easy to navigate menus and even gives you a definition on many of the features right on the camera if you need that.

Photos have been sharp and good color and many of the settings come out pretty true for automatic settngs for picture scenes and types.

Panasonic has had good conistent quality with the lens glass and with 16mp youcan certainly create monster size prints if you’d like and for online the photos are great as they are with most cameras of half the megapixels.

Pricing is competitive with other bands, personally I have always had a good experience with Panasonic products. It isn’t too heavy and is ok in a shirt pocket or back pocket providing you remember it is there.

There are though many smaller cameras if that is an issue but very few if any with all these features and 16mp. Always remember, these little camera will NOT match the large 35mm Nikons, Canons, Sony fullframe digital cameras. I hear so many who have that expectation, can’t and won’t happen. But many of these little cameras do a great job at an affordable price for most.

I needed a small, inexpensive, good-quality, easy-to-use camera for my job. My main use for this camera is taking good, clear indoor before/after photos of various electronic devices and related components. My requirements are a large LCD viewer, the ability to use common AA batteries, have my settings (date/time, photo mode) retained after batteries were removed and replaced, and a quick way to transfer images to my PC’s that doesn’t rely solely on a USB cable.

Preferring not to have to deal with camera angle or cumbersome tricks to reduce flash reflection from shiny surfaces, I was hoping to find something that would allow effective non-flash settings where a semi steadily-held camera could take clear, acceptable indoor pictures as required by the companies that I do work for.

As much as I tried, I could not get good, consistent results with the e510 but I seem to have found that camera with the L24.

So far with the L24, I’ve taken pictures of HDTV televisions (displays powered both on and off), PCB boards, product labels, macro shots of venting capacitors, etc. – *all without flash*, using only ambient room lighting.

For me, time is an important factor and with these onsite job shots, I do not have the time or desire to do pre-shot adjustments or after-processing like resizing, gamma-tweaking, or cropping. The shots I take need to be ready to be attached to an email or be uploaded to technician portals. The settings that I have found that work for me is the “white balance” and “motion detect” set for auto, resolution set for 1024×768 (for email-ready small file and dimension), and flash set for “off”.

As long as my subjects aren’t in the shadows, the camera is held relatively steady, and the images framed properly, my pictures are clear and all I have to do once I return home is transfer to my PC, attach and send. The settings as described above allow clear pictures for my uses in both regular and macro modes.

The camera remembers my settings with its AA batteries out and its 3″ LCD viewer lets me verify a good shot (they’ve all been pretty good so far).

Connectivity:
All of my PC’s have a card slot that accommodates the SD type, so if the included UC-E6 cable isn’t handy, I remove the SD card from the camera and transfer images that way. If I needed more of these cables, I can get them for $4 each on eBay.

You don’t have to use a SD card (camera has 17MB built-in) but I do recommend using a card for the extra storage and image-transfer/connectivity options.

When buying a SD card, consider the card-reading compatibility with your existing equipment if you intend on using using the card to transfer images. Some card readers do not read SDHC (high-capacity) cards, I was aware of this potential compatibility issue beforehand and bought a standard SD 2GB (not a SDHC) card.

I’m sure once more people buy this camera, more features than I covered will be discussed. There are settings on the L24 that I will probably never use. In my quick tour through the menu settings (haven’t read the manual yet – haha) I didn’t see where you can manually adjust aperture or shutter speed independently but there is an exposure control. The lack of manual settings might be a minus for serious photographers but like I said before, photography isn’t a hobby for me – I just want to take good pictures easily and quickly.

I’ve had this camera for just a little while and I’m very pleased with it so far. It does exactly what I want it to do (excellent daytime photos, pretty good low light photos, HD for short videos, and an excellent zoom). It’s very simple to operate in the auto and easy modes for taking quick pictures. The camera does a good job of sensing the right settings for the photo. But if you want to learn more about photography it gives you the option of configuring the settings yourself in varying degrees in different modes.

I’ve seen lots of complaints about the battery life but it’s not been an issue for me so far. But, then again, I’m not taking 400 photos a day. Sheezzzz, who does that anyway? I’ve gotta a life and better things to do than take pictures by the hundreds. Moreover, just take a backup battery with you. You’re a knucklehead if you don’t anyway.

The most annoying complaint I have about the camera is the flash. Canon fell asleep on that one. It’s located in the upper left corner where you would put your left hand to hold the camera. And it pops up every time you turn the camera on. That’s just poor engineering. Having said that, it’s by no means a deal breaker…..just annoying.

The camera is a bit on the pricey side but it delivers a quality product. And I have confidence it won’t have an untimely “malfunction” like Janet Jackson did a few years ago.

For how I like to, and what I like to shoot, I have not had a better camera than the LX5.

The Leitz lens is super sharp…”it’s all about the lens” is the old saying in film terms. My old standard were Nikon lenses I loved shooting with, the 24mm f/2.8, 55mm f/3.5 macro and the 105mm f/2.8 short telephoto were iconic lenses known for their sharpness. I shot a few times with a film Leica M5 and that was super sharp too, like the LX5.

The 24mm (35mm equivalent) is my view of life – I used to live with the Nikon 24 f/2.8 on my FM – the Panasonic camera and Leica lens is at least a sharp if not more so, with less distortion. No more fat arms or pulled cheeks at the edges, everything looks pretty normal given it’s a super wide. I can hold the camera at arms length and take good two-shots of my wife and me in a dim elevator or dark restaurant without a glare-y harsh flash. Magical.

The 2.0 maximum f-stop is great for these two-shots. In the underwater room at the California Academy of Sciences the other day, I did the two shot of us at 24mm @ f/2.0 @ 1/30th at a pretty low ISO so the shot had no digital noise at all but captured the weird color cast of being several feet underwater which wouldn’t have happened with a flash – beautiful! All while holding the camera at arm’s length because of the wide angle could get my wife and I with fish above, perfect (no more asking strangers to take our pic!).

The camera’s light weight and small size fit my hands just right. I’m getting older and now nearly at retirement cannot put up with the bulk of an SLR anymore. At the same time, with my eyesight going and getting some arthritis is my finger joints, I no longer am fond of the ultra-tiny digital point and shoots with their equally tiny controls that I’m constantly hitting by mistake. The LX5 is a good compromise for me, mostly mechanical buttons and switches clearly marked so I can operate them without glasses – my last two Panasonic point and shoots were more pocketable but this led to casual handling and subsequent droppage and cracked LCDs. The LX5 is large and heavy enough to let me know that I’m carrying a real camera, not a piece of jewelry or a toy.

I carry the LX5 camera and it’s given me great photographs easily and is really helping to capture my later years of life – great camera.

Love this camera. I bout this for a trip to Kauai with my wife. It worked great in every activity we did. We took it snorkeling, in the rain, on a inner tube tour. It didn’t matter where went, or what we did, this camera performed. Capturing every moment wonderfully. I added a large capacity SD card and had to download pictures on our last full day (400 pictures and about 20 minutes of video).

I had one problem that was operator error. I failed to ensure the battery door was fully closed after downloading pictures. The camera failed during a morning snorkel. I simply dried it out in the room over breakfast and restarted it. Still working great.

This camera is small enough to put in your pocket and goes great all day. Snorkeling at Poipu to the rim of Waimea Canyon and everything in between, this camera is ready for it.

Things you’ll immediately notice compared to D90: solid more magnesium and rubber in build and the custom features like U1 and U2 modes on the dial which do a great job of remembering settings you like to use! In general it seems like every setting is so customizeable that it’s much easier to get images out of camera that I had to spend alot of time editing to get out of my olympus. The autofocus is wicked fast and the quality at ISO 6400 out of camera is the best i’ve ever seen for a mid range level camera.

Heads up to the normal consumer without tons of pro movie making equipment and aspiration….
Movie is nice to have sometimes; but if you’re getting this just for movies of fast moving stuff like kids I think you’ll find the continuous focus feature isn’t up to the challenge and the rolling shutter issue is there like all DSLRs. You probably will get more useful in focus video out of some cheap consumer cameras (that have less depth of field) for that sort of thing. Note also the LCD screen doesn’t tilt so if you like to hold the camera very low you might be dissapointed.

For someone looking to get serious with their photography and who has had prior mediocre experiences with DSLRs (especially nikon) I think you’ll be impressed. The hot pixel issue mentioned by some I haven’t seen at all.

As for megapixel comparison don’t worry about it you won’t notice a difference vs comparable cameras.

Word of advice, the 18-105 kit is mediocre (was only way to pick up camera when I was looking) but if I were to do it over again I would go with the body only and get a 35 mm f1.8 prime as I think it’s lighter and faster so more versatile most of the time.

I’ve been a fan of Canon PowerShot. The first one I used was A200 that I borrowed from my friend before buying the A590 two years ago. While I love my A590, I find it difficult to take pictures in low lightning. When I set foot to get a new camera, I was debating between G12 and S95. The two of them have very similar specs, except S95 is smaller and has aperture priority starting at 2.0. However, when I went to Best Buy to take some test shots, the S95 is too small for me. I felt like I could drop it at any moment. Also, I took about 10 shots and about 3 of them were blurry. With the same specs, the G12 did not even fail to take a blurry photo. The images were sharp and it felt right in my hands, despite a bit heavier than my A590. Still, I debated on whether I should get the G12 until I saw it on sale. At the time I purchased it, G12 was slightly cheaper than S95! I ordered it with 1 day shipping and it arrived promptly.

As soon as I took it out of the box, I immediately began to play with it. The G12 is very user-friendly. I tested it under my very bad indoor lightning and it did not fail to take good pictures. Among the 300+ photos I took until the battery ran out, I only found 1 or 2 out of focus pictures. The colors are true and the pictures look very artistic. A lot of people who saw my pictures were surprised at the quality. The extra features such as color swap, fish eyes, and miniature mode are nice and also very easy to use. I took some portraits and my skin looked so smooth.

Despite it being a bulky camera, the G12 is the best camera I’ve ever used. Again and again, I keep on recommending Canon to people who are looking for new cameras. Although the battery life needs improvement and the lens can be a bit faster, the G12 is a beast. Even in very low lightning and the lens about 1cm to the object, this camera manages to produce some unbelievably sharp pictures. It’s like I don’t even have to do the work! All I need to do is to click a button. Yes, it’s THAT amazing!

I haven’t bought a new camera for myself in years, so I did a lot of research before buying this one. Actually, I did too much research and wound up confused. I finally just broke down and ordered this one because it seemed like a good deal.

I’m really glad I bought it. It takes great pictures and it’s easy to use. I don’t like to spend a lot of time figuring out technology, and the menu on this camera makes things really easy to figure out. I haven’t even looked at the owner’s manual since I got the camera. The panoramic feature is awesome: just set it on panoramic, hold the button down, and scan the scene from left to right.

The only thing I wish this camera had was a lower MP setting. It takes pictures in four settings: VGA, 5 MP, 10 MP, and 14 MP. The 10 and 14 are very detailed and ideal for blowing up into large prints. Even the 5 MP looks good in a large size. The VGA setting is pretty poor quality, not even worthy of viewing on your computer or sending to someone via email. The solution to this is the 5 MP setting, which produces a great quality picture but is also a very large-sized file, so you can’t send many pics at once. It would be great if this camera had a 2 or 3 MP setting. Not a huge deal, though.

I’ve had Sony cameras in the past and as much as I’ve liked them I’ve always thought they weren’t the best. I owned a Canon Rebel xti 10.1 MP camera prior to buying this one. I decided to sell it due to the fact that it was bulky and not practical to carry around. I loved the camera as the quality and performance was great. After much thought I decided to purchase this Sony DSC-HX9V after reading a photography website review that gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I decided to take the plunge seeing that it offered 1080P video recording as well.I am extremely satisfied that I purchased this. The picture quality is amazing!!!!. The video is flawless and beautiful. A great feature is the zoom. I love the 16X optical zoom. It retains the quality of the Video and pictures. There are plenty of features which I haven’t fully explored yet but can’t wait to try. The panorama feature is amazing.

You will not be disappointed with the purchase of this camera. It takes great pictures and amazing video. It has a ton of features including panoramic view and incredible zoom.

The only thing I can possibly complain about is the location of the flash which is located on top of the left side of the camera. It is definitely not a big deal just a minor annoyance. Well spent money for a beautifully built and excellent digital camera.

I’ve been searching around for a P&S camera for my wife and came across this. Was deciding between this and another couple of models from Olympus and Fujifilm but settled down for this in the end after doing much research. Mainly for the rich features. It is a great buy that i will never regret! My wife and myself simply love it.A versatile multi function cam that is very well worth the price. The powerful 35x optical zoom is especially useful for concerts, shows and performances. It provides unlimited fun for observing the skies and shooting wildlife too. It would cost a lot more if you were to buy a DSLR and the lens required to do this kind of zoom.Picture and video quality are fantastic. The stabilizer works very well even if you zoom all the way to 140x (with 4x digital zoom that comes with the camera). The auto focus should be good enough for normal shots. But using the manual settings will give you surprisingly great quality results for your pictures and special shots. Use it together with a filter adapter and some lens, it will make you feel like a pro!

Of course, you can’t compare this to a pro DSLR which also cost many times more than this. But for an average to semi-pro shooter, the value of it goes far beyond the price tag that comes with it. I would highly recommend this!
